Rendering

Rendering is a form of wall covering for the exterior of a property. Essentially it is a form of cladding, used to protect the structure of the wall. In the USA, timber cladding is used, which reflects the highs and lows of their climate. In the UK, we use mineral renders, as they are more appropriate to our climate. Render is applied to the exterior walls in a very similar way to plaster being applied to the interior walls.

Rendering has always been popular, and it has become even more popular over the last decade, as new products come onto the market, and people realise the benefits of its use. Render comes in an enormous range of finishes and colours, and it works well on all all categories of building, from medieval, to Victorian, and right up to the latest and most contemporary structures. There is a render to suit your property and your budget.

Render solves a number of problems for the homeowner, and solves them well. When applied correctly, by an experienced professional, it will add value to your property, and it will give it a great new look.

Most people choose rendering for one of two reasons;

  • Rendering to protect the exterior structure from the elements, and to waterproof the walls.

  • Rendering to update the exterior and give it a more modern look, especially if the walls are becoming tired and shabby.

Which form of render is most suitable for my property ?

There are so many products on the market, both traditional and modern, that it can be very confusing for the consumer. Plaster Masters are happy to advise on the most suitable render for your property and your budget.

Cement Render
Cement is the traditional form of render, found all over the country, on every estate and on every street. It is mixed on site and applied in three separate layers, the last one being smooth, and designed to receive a painted finish. Cement render is relatively cheap to buy, but the application is labour intensive, and that's where the main costs lie. Cement render requires painting every few years to maintain its looks.

Polymer Render
Polymer renders have revolutionised the rendering industry, as they are designed to have all the benefits with none of the drawback. They are flexible, which gives far greater durability, and they last for many years. They are also coloured, so essentially maintenance free.

Acrylic Render
Acrylic renders are comprised of fine acrylic hairs which are incredibly tough. Acrylic render is applied as a thin coat, which is extremely flexible and durable, and will weatherproof the exterior very effectively. They are coloured, and also UV resistant, so the colour stays fresh for many years. Acrylic is moisture proof, it creates a moisture barrier, so will not allow a property to breathe.

Lime Render
Lime rendering is the oldest and most traditional form of render used in the UK. It produces a beautiful texture and an organic looking covering on a property and its highly durable. Its main advantage is its breathability. Older houses are designed to transfer moisture through the walls, they need to breathe, and lime rendering allows that process to happen. Its perfect for older properties, although is more difficult and time consuming to apply.

There are now newer and more modern lime render products available, giving all the benefits of traditional lime render, but with the ease of application found with silicon and polymer products. K-Lime, for instance, is a very good render. With these advances, doubtless lime render will become even more popular and cost effective.

K-Rend
K-Rend is a British company, and manufacture a range of fantastic, modern silicone rendering products. Silicone render is flexible and water repellent. It comes in a large range of finishes and a vast range of colours. Its maintenance free and lasts for 20-40 years, and longer, depending on the quality of the preparation. Always use a professional for K-Rend products. There is definitely a K-Rend product for your home.

Render

I bought a house, and the render was in poor condition. It had been patched all over, and it didn't look very smart. I got a few quotes and used Plaster Masters. They have done a great job. House looks really nice and I am very satisfied.
